Empowering Change in the Kalinago Territory
Honoring Our Sisters, Building a Safer Future
Addressing Gender Based Violence in the Kalinago Territory
This project comprises an awareness campaign and a memorial initiative in honor of eight (8) Indigenous sisters who tragically lost their lives to intimate partner violence. As part of the campaign, a memorial plaque will be installed to commemorate their memory. Additionally, a solidarity march was held on November 25, 2023, from the Kalinago Council Office to Mr. Willard’s Shop, raising awareness and fostering community action against gender-based violence.
The campaign also featured a public speaking competition among students from Atkinson and Sineku Primary Schools, encouraging young voices to engage in meaningful dialogue on this critical issue.
Beyond awareness, the project empowers women and youth by providing access to academic and vocational opportunities. Participants will have the chance to pursue subjects such as Mathematics, English, Accounts, and Principles of Business at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) level. Additionally, select women will receive training in pastry making and sewing, equipping them with entrepreneurial skills to enhance financial independence and self-sufficiency.
This initiative is made possible through funding from the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), in partnership with the Kalinago Council and the Bureau of Gender Affairs.
Training on Domestic Violence, Awareness and Support
In collaboration with The Bureau of Gender Affairs we conducted a vital training session, engaging participants in an in-depth discussion on:
- Understanding Domestic Violence – Recognizing its forms, causes, and impact on individuals and communities.
- Creating a Safety Plan for Victims – Developing strategies to ensure the protection and well-being of those at risk.
- Resources for Survivors in Dominica – Exploring available support services and pathways to recovery.
This initiative aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to support survivors, advocate for change, and strengthen community response to domestic violence.
Memorial Tribute
Honoring Our Sisters
In a solemn tribute to the eight Indigenous sisters who tragically lost their lives to intimate partner violence, a memorial plaque has been installed. This initiative serves as a poignant reminder of their lives and the urgent need to address gender-based violence within the community. The plaque stands as a symbol of remembrance and a call to action for justice and change.
Call To Action Rally
A powerful rally was held, marching from the Kalinago Council’s office to Mr. Willard’s shop in St. Cyr, as a stand against gender-based violence. The event brought together a diverse group of participants, including parents, teachers, students from various schools across the territory, and dedicated community members. Their collective presence demonstrated a strong commitment to raising awareness, promoting change, and fostering a safer environment for all.

Building Awareness
By participating in this competition, students learned the value of speaking out against injustices and the power of their voices in shaping a more equitable future. The event underscored the significance of education and awareness in combating gender-based violence.
Empowerment Through Education
Opportunities for Growth
This project is dedicated to empowering women and youth by providing access to essential academic and vocational opportunities. Participants are encouraged to pursue subjects such as Mathematics, English, Principles of Accounts, and Principles of Business at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) level, equipping them with the knowledge needed for future success.
Additionally, select women will receive specialized training in pastry making and sewing, offering them the skills to embark on entrepreneurial ventures. These programs aim to enhance financial independence and self-sufficiency, fostering a sense of empowerment and resilience.
